Take a Look at...OLDEST GROUP

The Oldest Group working with Bridget during the first week of school.

The first week of school at The School in Rose Valley generally has no specials. Although this can seem
daunting at first, in the Og, we have found that this time affords us the marvelous luxury of learning to
do things together at our own pace, following our own individual interests and energy peeks and valleys. Long
industrious mornings spent exploring the dressups, playing board games or doing crafts naturally flow
smoothly into quiet activities such as writing and reading. An afternoon spent exploring Bamboo Island is the
perfect compliment to a long passionate discussion on how we
would like to do jobs this year. Projects and activities we
managed to undertake in this first week include, fairy
making, dress making, a hike and a boundary walk, a
writing process that attempts to tap into ones "stream
of Consciousness," a class game, book sharing in the
library with our new librarian Erin, a wonderful and
challenging math game called Close to 1,000 and at
least three chapters from our read aloud book, To Kill
a Mockingbird by Harper Lee.
What a wonderful way to begin things. As the year
progresses, may we always remember what can
happen if we remain aware of the natural flow of our
days: large motor to small motor, whole group problem
solving to space for introspection. For every intake of breath,
an outtake must certainly follow...And so it goes.
