Board of Directors
About the Board | The Board Members | Meeting Schedule
The School in Rose Valley is a non-profit corporation. Its members include all tuition-paying parents of currently enrolled students, staff members employed at least six months, the Principal, and board members upon taking office. Copies of the corporation by-laws are available to all members of the corporation in the school office.
The board of directors are the stewards of the school. The by-laws state that the board must manage "the business of the corporation, the stewardship of its resources and the oversight of its mission." The membership includes the Principal, two staff representatives selected by the staff, and 11 to 16 other members. At least half of the board must be parents of current students and at least two must be people who did not serve on the preceding board. Directors serve without pay.
The board meets monthly. Dates are published in the Freep, in the school phone directory and on this website. The board rarely meets in closed session.
Members are elected for overlapping three-year terms. The Committee on Directors is responsible for preparing a slate of nominees for the Spring election each year to fill any vacancies on the Board for the following year.
The board is responsible for hiring and evaluating the Principal. The Principal, in turn, is responsible for hiring all other staff and for most other educational decisions. The board is responsible for the financial stewardship of the school, setting tuition and the budget. The board plans for maintenance, renovation and development of facilities and grounds. It supports the Development Director in fundraising and the Parent Community Organization. It also oversees all committee activities within the School, with the Chair of each committee reporting back to the board.
Since its founding in 1929, SRV began a tradition of partnership with parents in the education of their young children. The board encourages this tradition of involvement. Parents and non-board members may attend board meetings or read board minutes (kept in the office). Parents can bring questions or concerns to the board in several ways. You can ask a board member directly (see the list of current board members below; phone numbers and emails are available in the school directory). You can address a letter to the board or attend a meeting. Guests are always welcome!
