Sustainability Spotlight

We are excited to begin our fourth major renovation project in the last six years. On June 12th, three days after the close of the 2005-06 school year, renovations to the interior and exterior of the Rawson building will begin. Rawson, named for SRV's first woodshop teacher, Mr. Edward Rawson (affectionately known as "Mister"), was originally built in 1952 with an addition in 1962 and currently houses our preschool and third and fourth grades (Main Circle). The building is in dire need of updated electrical, plumbing, and heating systems as well as improved classroom space.

Jim Bradberry, architect of The Grace Rotzel Center and of the recent renovations to the Main and Chip buildings, has once again worked his magic in the thoughtful re-design of Rawson. In keeping with the Sustainability Resolution adopted by the Board earlier this year, Jim has incorporated the use of environmentally friendly design and construction techniques.

Using the standards developed by the U.S. Green Building Council, demolition and construction materials will be sorted and recycled for use wherever possible, materials to be used include reclaimed hardwood and recycled aluminum sinks, rainwater will be harvested to use in the Organic Garden and Learning Center, ultra low or zero VOC paints (that release no, or minimal volatile organic compound pollutants, and are virtually odor free) will be utilized, light sensor switches and solar heating connections will be installed, and cork flooring, energy efficient appliances, and other materials that minimize our impact on the environment will be used. These sustainable choices will be transparent to the children and community by including educational signage, readable meters and plexiglass portals to give students and visitors interior views of the building. Rawson's renovation will be completed by August 25th, giving the preschool and Main Circle teachers plenty of time to get ready for the start of school in September. We'll be sure to update you in the fall.
