Happy singing!
For those new to SRV, here is a brief overview of the music program. To say that singing is the main focus of musical activities would be an understatement. Beginning in pre-school, there is an emphasis on correct sound production (sitting up straight, breathing, the basics) which progresses to work (in a fun way!) on developing the "head-voice" via lots of vocalization. I encourage every child to sing alone as often as possible, and in music class singing solos is very cool! The latest research indicates that by singing alone and hearing oneself (the younger the better!), the greater the likelihood that an individual will develop good pitch-matching ability and audiation (inner hearing) skills. These lead to enhanced musical ability in any area. The theory is: if you can sing it, you can play it. We sing (or speak) just about everything before any other musical activities occur.
Second in importance to singing is moving and dancing. Again, research indicates that if you can feel the music and move to its beat, your capabilities for playing and creating music are greatly increased. This is why we play so many musical/ movement games and do Freeze Dancing
On a parallel track to what I've just discussed are all sorts of fun and interesting musical forays. Our music room is endowed with wonderful instruments for children to explore and learn from. Many groups will be working with xylophones, and metallophones early in the year as well as non-pitched percussion and other melodic instruments.
Further, we have " Performance Days" and this is where I need parent help. These days occur 3 times a year and provide an opportunity for children to share a musical interest in an informal recital-like atmosphere. Possibilities for performances include singing, dancing, or playing an instrument. I always strive to have 100% participation by encouraging children to find a friend to sing or dance with if their confidence is not yet high enough for solo performance. However, MANY of our children have become so comfortable with performance that encouragement is not needed.
