Preschool

All preschool parents (including those of students rising to Kindergarten) are welcome to attend Building the Foundations of Literacy, a workshop offered by preschool teachers on Monday, May 19 from 7 to 8:30 in the 2 & 3 Day Preschool Room. The goal of the workshop is to articulate the ways in which literacy is supported in a play based progressive preschool environment. Childcare will not be provided.

Preschoolers enjoyed our recent Candlemaking Week. Lots of parents were on hand to help out.

There are three different preschool options at The School in Rose Valley.

Two Day Preschool

Our two day preschool is for our youngest students. It meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:15 to 11:45 and is for children who range in age from 2 years , seven months, to about 3 ½. Children must be toilet trained (with regular reminders able to independently use the bathroom which is located within the classroom) prior to beginning this program. Our two day program usually consists of 6 to 12 students with a lead teacher and an assistant teacher. It is a nurturing, low-key introduction to a school environment. There is an enormous amount of individual attention and focus on creating a classroom community that feels safe and inviting. Each time the class meets, they work on art projects together, have a morning circle, spend time in the outdoors, and have snack time (healthy snacks are provided by the school and are included in the price of tuition). Plenty of time is spent playing, exploring, singing, building, baking, reading and pretending, and learning how to be part of a classroom community.

Three Day Preschool

Our three day preschool is for children who are between 3 ½ and 4 ½. It meets on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8:15 to 11:45. There is a full day option in this class. For families who choose this option, the school day ends at 3:00. We also have an extended day program from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. Children who spend the whole day have lunch (provided by the school and included in the price of tuition) and quiet time in addition to more time outdoors and on projects. The three day class is typically 16 students with a lead teacher and an assistant. Children begin attending special subjects like woodshop and music at this level. They also begin to interact a little more with the rest of the children on our campus. This class usually partners with our third and fourth graders who visit regularly, read with the preschoolers, and help out on occasion. There are daily art activities, time spent outdoors and snack time. In addition, there is plenty of time for playing, pretending, dressing up, building with blocks and other materials, reading, creating, and learning how to navigate relationships, solve conflicts, be a part of a classroom community, and become more independent.

Five Day Preschool

Our five day preschool is for our oldest preschoolers – children who are 4 or 5. It usually has 16 children with a lead teacher and an assistant. Children may stay for half (11:45) or whole (3:00) days. We also have an extended day program from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. Children who spend the whole day have snack time (provided by the school and included in the price of tuition) and quiet time in addition to more time outdoors and on projects. In addition to woodshop and music, children also attend classes in science, sports and library. At this level, they are capable of having longer circle times, trying more complex projects like sewing and playwriting, experimenting more with concepts and materials, and practicing newly learned social skills. They become more comfortable navigating the campus and opening up their worlds to include more adult teachers and older students, thus laying the groundwork for kindergarten.
