Progressive Minds Lecture Series
George Thomas will tell the story of Will Price, founder of the Rose Valley Arts and Crafts community and internationally known architect in his day. Mr. Thomas, who has written biographies of both Will Price and Frank Furness, heads his own research firm for historic restoration and has been on the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania teaching the history of architecture since 1978.
Morris Potter will show you lots of old pictures of Rose Valley, explain why some things are so and talk about the evolution of Rose Valley’s institutions, including The School in Rose Valley, Hedgerow Theatre and the Rose Valley Folk. Morris is an SRV alumna, parent of SRV alumni and chair of the Rose Valley Museum and Historical Society.
The advance subscription price for all three lectures is $15. Tickets will be $6 per lecture at the door. Carpooling is encouraged, especially on January 6. Light refreshments will be served at the conclusion of each talk. For further information contact The School in Rose Valley, 610 566-1088 or email the school. The Life of Rose Valley The School in Rose Valley and the Rose Valley Folk announce a series of lectures celebrating the history of Rose Valley and the 75th anniversary of The School. The ROSE VALLEY FOLK celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2001. Its history is closely linked to that of the Arts and Crafts movement in Rose Valley. Today the Rose Valley Folk is a social and civic organization whose membership is open to both borough residents (a minimum of 55%) and non-residents (from within 6 miles of the Old Mill in Rose Valley) for an annual fee of $75. From September to June, the Folk sponsors a variety of events which provide an opportunity to meet and socialize with friends and neighbors. As part of its civic responsibilities in Rose Valley, the Folk sponsors a Boy Scout Troop and blood drives, and periodically provides space for functions for the Rose Valley Pool, Helen Kate Furness Library, Hedgerow Theatre, the Rose Valley Gardeners and The School in Rose Valley. Since its founding in 1929, THE SCHOOL IN ROSE VALLEY has provided a supportive, engaging learning environment for children in preschool through sixth grade. The founders of SRV designed an intentionally small school where children learn through child-centered experience, inquiry and exploration. This progressive tradition continues to thrive at SRV today. On the school’s wooded campus, children develop an appreciation of nature and learn the importance and responsibility of living in a democratic community. They are expertly guided toward knowledge and meaning by trusted adults who help them develop problem-solving skills, think independently, work collaboratively, and communicate effectively.
