Minicourses - Multi-Age Adventures in Learning

by Scott Tim

In my first minicourse, I nearly killed the principal. Carlye and I were leaning over the top of the model rocket's mechanism, puzzling out the bug. WOA! Screech! (Scream). I wonder sometimes how I managed to keep my job.

I decided to try something a little less dangerous this year. In the same spirit of flight, my recent minicourse focused on the creation of hot air balloons. Working with Eliza, the Science teacher, and various representatives of each age group, we spent six weeks learning about the properties of hot air flight and constructing functioning tissue paper balloons. Five brightly colored craft are just waiting for the perfect calm winter morning.

Other students had the opportunity to construct fairies in the nooks and crannies of the Oldest Group Room. Mike boggled brains and provided opportunities to explore chess. Other parents, teachers, and students knitted and crocheted, chatting away while sipping hot cocoa. Annie, Nita and company took trips to various museums and galleries to experience and talk about art. Jane and Ridge taught eager minds to tie knots. We've seen tap dancing, jump rope games, karate, frog dissection, fly tying, archery, baking, batik, yoga, model home (frame) construction, architecture, building with bamboo, Dog Club, American Sign Language, a percussion ensemble, Kings Quest, a school newspaper, and Tea Time - complete with lessons in manners. Minicourses at The School in Rose Valley have blossomed into a beautiful activity for children and adults alike. Parents, teachers, and community members teach three to six week courses on subjects they feel passionate about. Small, multi-aged groups of children choose their courses and spend an hour on Wednesday afternoons engaged in long-term projects. The OG is inspired to try their hands at teaching minicourses in the next round. Teachers and students enjoy working with folks they would normally never see. Parents share their talents and joys. New friendships are forged. Wow…

How lucky are we to be a part of this of community, raising and nurturing our children in such a rich and respectful environment?
