The School in Rose Valley Celebrates 75 years in 2004-05
by Juliana Flower, Development Committee Chair, Board member and parent of Thomas and Kate
The 2004-05 school year will mark a significant milestone in SRV's history: 75 successful years of progressive education! To do it right, we will be launching our celebration with a special alumni reunion from April 30 to May 2, May Fair weekend, 2004. In addition to this year's May Fair activities, alumni will gather for reunion dinners and a special Sing, play alumni games, shop at the school store, share SRV stories and memories, and much more.
In the fall, SRV will begin an exciting year-long educational symposium, Progressive Education in the 21st Century, which will celebrate the legacy of progressive education and envision its future with participants from a variety of institutions from across the country. The symposium schedule includes a Fall Conference (October 7-9), a series of web-based learning circles, and a Spring Conference (April 22-23).
The Fall Conference will be highlighted by a keynote address by Alfie Kohn, nationally recognized author and advocate of what he calls "the schools our children deserve," and an outspoken opponent of standardized testing. As the symposium draws closer and details are finalized, we will publicize the opportunities for parent and family involvement.
Also in the fall, we will co-host a unique High Spirits with and at Hedgerow Theatre that will include both live and silent auctions. Later, we'll present a lecture series that examines the origins of the Rose Valley community and the founding of the School. The Rose Valley Borough Council will meet on our campus, and a rotating archival exhibition will be available throughout the year for all to see. A very special Arts Ball is planned for April, and in June, we'll have the best community picnic you've ever attended. Our celebration will culminate with the publication of a 75th anniversary cookbook and a Bulletin devoted to alumni stories. Feeling jazzed by any of these activities? If so, contact Julie Flower or Karla Read to find out how you can plug in more.
We're very excited about the year to come, and hope that many of you will want to share our excitement by participating in one or more of these events. Here's to another 75 years of SRV!
