Introducing Learning Exhibitions
Don't miss the Learning Exhibition on Thursday, December 14th from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. This curricular extravaganza will provide all students in 3 day preschool through 6th grade an opportunity to reflect on and share their learning with each other and their parents in a meaningful way. The Learning Exhibition will help parents see and understand how their children are learning across ages and subject areas every day.
Each age group will "exhibit" a display to share with each other and parents during the evening of Thursday, December 14th, from 5:30 - 6:15, and on Friday, December 15th during the day. Some groups are also preparing a demonstration or performance to take place during the same week that will be just for their parents in their rooms.
The classroom teachers will be working together with one or two special subject teachers – and with the students – to plan the displays around curriculum that has been happening in the group and/or the special subject classrooms this fall, during Cycle I of our schedule. The displays will feature:
- 3-day Preschool & Shop
- 5-day Preschool & Partnership Learning
- Kindergarten, Science & Technology
- Primary Circle & Music
- Main Circle, Art & Library
- Oldest Group, Art & Science
Thursday evening will culminate in a short concert from 6:15 p.m.-7:00 p.m. that will feature the SRV Chorus, a small recorder ensemble, and the elementary groups that have had Music this cycle (the Primary Circle and the Oldest Group). Please mark your calendar for this exciting SRV event and for our second Learning Exhibition at the end of Cycle II which is scheduled for Thursday, March 29th.
In designing this first all-school Learning Exhibition, the staff agreed that as educators, we have the following goals for the event.
- The exhibition should be for the students as well as the parents, and should be developmentally appropriate.
- It is important for students to reflect on their learning and work. The exhibition should include a component of student self reflection.
- Learning does not always result in a perfectly finished "product." The exhibition will focus on the students' learning process, including their inspiration, discoveries, struggles, and lessons learned.
- We have been striving to deepen the students' learning experiences and connections. The exhibition will feature areas where teachers and students have worked together and the curriculum has been integrated.
- It is most meaningful to put the students' and teachers' thinking and energy into one or two projects, rather than trying to showcase everything the students have learned during a particular Cycle. So for each age group, the exhibition will highlight just one or two themes or areas of study.
- The event will feature examples of work from all of the age groups and all of the special subjects to give students and parents an understanding of the kind of learning that has occurred this fall throughout the school.
It has been an exciting year so far. Our small size gives us the luxury of implementing innovative ideas and curriculum much faster than most schools. We are looking forward to seeing you at the Learning Exhibition and hope it provides you with another opportunity to see some of the rich learning happening in classrooms. We also hope it proves to be a rich learning experience for the children. We'll see you there!
