Take a Look At. . . Preschool Partnerships

Preschool’s Hometown Senior Center Partnership....by Maureen McHugh, Preschool Teacher

This partnership was initiated last year because we think intergenerational experiences are a vital part of a young child’s education and children seem to have less contact with extended family than in previous generations. With a year under our belts, we decided to continue this partnership based on feedback from both seniors and preschoolers.

We had our first get-together with our new partners from the Hometown Senior Center on Tuesday, November 9, 2004. We spent our time meeting one another and interviewing the seniors. We also worked together to create the tree with falling leaves that is outside our front door. Our second visit was in a half group to their center on November 23rd. While there, we made pumpkin bread to be served at a tea later in the day. We also drew pictures to be included in baskets of food that the center was delivering to those in need for Thanksgiving.

Since only a few seniors actually travel to SRV, traveling to their center allows our children more exposure to the elders. The seniors we visit are in good health and capable. They love it when we come! (The photo shows Maureen and MariAnn’s group discuss a recent visit to The Hometown Senior Center.)
