Learning About Food

The Primary Circle is studying Food because it is a cultural universal, something people across time and space have in common. Using the questions "Why do we need food?" "How has eating and farming changed over time?" "How is what we eat similar to and different from what other people eat?" "And how do people choose what to eat?" children are learning science (e.g. botany: How does food grow?) and social studies (e.g. geography and culture: In China people tend to eat more rice than we do here...Why?), as well as using tools of Language Arts (e.g. Non-fiction writing), Technology (e.g. using software to map how food gets from seed to table), and art (e.g. studying the work of Saxton Freymann) to investigate Food. These pictures are from a hands-on investigation of the question "How do we get our food?" in which students picked basil at a local farm and (using their mathematical skills to measure, estimate, and count) turned it into pesto to share with the school community.
