Summer Reading

"Reading to children aloud everyday is as important as brushing their teeth and fastening their seat belts."

- Rosemary Wells

This year I have explored many resources to find books to add to our summer reading list. We reached out to area schools and asked parents, children, teacher and others for their recommendations. This has resulted in a list of books of every genre: thriller, fantasy, mystery, historical and realistic fiction. Please refer to the Library page of our school web site in the coming days for this list. Keeping children interested in books and reading over the summer is important but remember that it should also be fun. ProLiteracy, a non-profit literacy group based in New York, thinks introducing boys to comic books can sometimes spark a dormant interest in reading. So if they want to read anime, go ahead! Also, don't forget the many great books now available on tapes or CD's that local libraries offer. Instead of popping in a movie for that long summer car drive, why not listen to a book; it makes it fun for the whole family, including front seat motorists!

Below is a Lexile chart which is one tool to help guide your child toward books at their reading level. The Lexile Framework for Reading is an approach to reading measurement that matches students to appropriately challenging reading materials. It measures both reader ability and text difficulty on the same scale, called the Lexile scale. This approach allows families and teachers to encourage reader progress using Lexile measures as a tool. The Lexile system does not however, indicate content or grade appeal. For information on other types of tools or ideas to help your child along their reading path, don't hesitate to contact me in the Library.
