Spotlight on . . .
Parent Volunteers
by Juliana Flower, SRV parent and board member
Parents find a myriad of ways to get involved as volunteers at SRV. Some, like me, serve on committees or on the school board, and find small ways to contribute to the life of the classroom. When I am able, I always enjoy giving the teachers a break at lunchtime...it's one of the best ways I know to get to know my children's classmates!
Other volunteers find ways to make truly remarkable contributions to the life of SRV. Chad Tingley, Buddy Chalker and Debby Rosan are good examples of such devoted parent volunteers. Like those parents who originally built and ran this school, they have selflessly given countless hours and made an indelible impression on those around them.
Chad Tingley is, according to Ridge Wilkins, "a truly valuable resource....his heart is at least half the size of his 6 foot 6 frame." He has served on the facilities committee, worked on Putter Days and contributed hundreds of hours to the maintenance of the Main and Chip buildings. By far his most outstanding contribution has been his partnership with Ridge and Buddy Chalker on the pool house. "Many days of standing on ladders and baking in the sun has produced a building that will be around for years to come," says Ridge. "I budgeted for a shed; they have given us a pool house. When the budget dictated a design change, they came up with the difference out of pocket...I'm proud to be associated with people of this caliber." Buddy also served on the facilities committee, and in addition to working on the construction of the pool house, he designed it! Other volunteers who worked on the pool complex include Ezra Felker and Bob Nonemaker.
Debby Rosan's volunteer work, though on a smaller scale, is no less valuable. She has served as a class parent and volunteer extraordinaire all over campus, from the library to just about every event you can name. Last year, she spent many Thursday mornings sewing and embroidering with the 1-2s , a project she proposed as a community builder, which, according to Jane, "really helped to accomplish that. The children helped and encouraged one another and admired one another's work." Debby has always been an extremely reliable resource for teachers and event chairs alike.
