Art

The art room has been transformed into a clay studio, with wheels unveiled and the kiln fired up. Children are fired up too. How thrilling to be in a school with these resources for such young artists! Children and clay make a great combination.

We hold tightly to the tradition at SRV of making "butter stick figures," a figure made from a piece of clay the size of a stick of butter. And like any tradition, this one evolves from year to year. It is a simple formulaic approach but given a new twist each year by the children. In years past, children used their butter stick figures to create three dimensional self portraits. This year, some will use this form of expression to create magical creatures based on their passion for Star Wars and Harry Potter. (Last year we had a myriad of football players.) As your child moves through the years at SRV from Kindergarten to OG, their butter stick figures not only reflect their developmental level, and their observational skills, but their outside interests as well.
