The Board and Its Newest Members
As stewards of the school, SRV's Board of Directors, according to by-laws, manage "the business of the corporation, the stewardship of its resources and the oversight of its mission." Board members' commitment of time, leadership and resources is of enormous benefit to the School. The expertise of board members in areas such as finance, facilities and fundraising saves the school time and money each year that can be put toward the educational program.
The board's responsibilities range from the financial stewardship of the school (annually adopting a budget and setting tuition), to planning for maintenance, renovation and development of our facilities and grounds. In addition, board members support the School's fundraising efforts through their participation in the Annual Fund and cultivation of donors. The 17 member volunteer board consists of Carlye as Head of School, Jane (Primary Circle) and Anu (Technology and Staff & Program Development) as staff representatives, and 14 parent volunteer members. Eleven members of our board currently have students enrolled, the remaining three are parents of alumni. The by-laws require that at least half of the volunteer members have children attending the School during their term.
As members' overlapping three-year terms come to an end, the Committee on Directors annually prepares a slate of nominees for the spring election to fill any vacancies. This year, Ross Schmucki and Kara Zidek are new to the Board. Ross is an in-house counsel for DuPont, where he focuses on resolving major litigation for the Company and counseling clients. Ross is trained as a mediator and professionally interested in alternatives in resolving conflict. He is married to Kim, the lead teacher in our two-day preschool, and is the father of, Chris (Sara's group) and Jane (Molly & Kathy's group). Kara served on the SRV Development Committee last year, and in addition to her second year as a class parent in her daughter, Caroline's kindergarten class, is also the Chair of Special Events like High Spirits and March Madness, our spring auction. Kara is currently practicing family law with a boutique firm, Berner & Klaw, in Philadelphia, and dedicates significant time to pro bono work with the Volunteers for the Indigent Program as well as the Philadelphia Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts.
In addition to attending regular Board of Directors meetings, the annual Board/Staff Retreat, and the Association of Delaware Valley Independent Schools (ADVIS) Annual Trustees Program, each board member sits on at least one standing board committee. The committees, which include the Committee on Directors; Finance; Development; Campus Planning; Diversity; and Parent Community Organization, are the mechanism through which much of the School's non-educationally related work gets done. All SRV community members are welcome to be a part of our standing committees. To volunteer or to recommend someone outside of the school community for any of these committees, please contact the committee chair listed on the website, or call Craig Hodges, Board President.
Parents and non-board members may attend board meetings or read board minutes (kept in the office). Any community member can bring questions or concerns to the board by contacting a specific member, addressing a letter to the board, or attending a meeting. Guests are always welcome! Visit the website for more information about our Board, its members and how you can become involved.
