Our Chorus Concert

By Jodie Brown, Music Teacher

For the first in time in The School in Rose Valley's history, the school chorus is preparing and will present an entire concert of its own on June 6th at 1:30 p.m. This concert offers a unique opportunity for the school's most avid singers (who are usually only a part of a bigger concert) to really sing their hearts out for families and friends. Among the selections will be past chorus favorites (Cantar, Pick Yourself Up and The Apple Core, to name a few) as well as some new music. There may be presentations from a few smaller groups of singers, as well, but I'll have to let you know more about that as we get closer to the date.

For those of you who may be new to The School in Rose Valley, our school chorus consists of enthusiastic singers from 2nd grade and up. We meet every Monday after recess for 45 minutes. A typical Chorus rehearsal consists of quite a bit of warming up, practicing music, learning harmonies and, for the first time this year, some beginning sight singing (this won't take place until after the concert). My goals for the group are to expose the children to music they might not otherwise experience, to provide another singing experience within the context of the school day, to improve every child's vocal production and pitch matching and, most important of all, to encourage life long participation in singing. As many of you know, there's nothing else quite like a good choral experience. Parents of 1st graders: Please attempt to attend the concert on June 6th with your children. We have many great singers in the 1st grade here and I'd love for them to be inspired to join next year.

As it has in the past 2 years, the SRV Chorus has again begun its partnership with the Russell Byers Charter School in Philadelphia. Each chorus has sent 6th grade "ambassadors" to the others' school for preliminary visits. These visits lay the foundation for the whole - chorus visits that take place in April and May. On Friday, April 27th, the SRV Chorus will travel by train to RBCS for a day of singing, sharing, playing music games and experiencing the culture of a city school. The Horse Feather Singers from Russell Byers will visit SRV on Friday, May 18th. We are looking for parents who would be willing to help shuttle children to and from the Rose Valley train station on both dates. If you're available to help, please contact me: jodie@theschoolinrosevalley.org as soon as possible.    I'm looking forward to a spring full of singing. See you at the concert on June 6th!
