Third and fourth grade teacher Gloria Bonsall-Shepard brings a unique perspective to her role on SRV's current staff. She has experienced the spirit and curriculum of SRV through varying roles and at different times in the school's history. Gloria began her time at SRV in the early 1990s and has been Science Teacher, Oldest Group reading and writing assistant, and Kindergarten/First Grade assistant. After some time at home to start a family (Gloria's children Skye and Julian are currently enrolled at SRV in kindergarten and 3rd grade, respectively), Gloria has returned to SRV, first as a lead teacher in the preschool and, in her latest reincarnation, as one of our lead Main Circle (3rd/4th grade) teachers. "Rose Valley is the only place I can imagine having my kids and teaching. Working here is doing what I really want to do."

Although Gloria admits that some things change with time, with fort building replacing playing horses and technology enhancing the way we teach specials subjects, some things at SRV are simply timeless. "The woods are going to be a theme for all groups, at all times. The school is very much the same as the first time I was here over a decade ago. The program and feel of community still exists. SRV is a place you can always come back to and recognize." She has fond memories of alumni and wonderful stories of current students, reflecting that in every role she has played at SRV "each position is about meeting kids' needs in school and challenging them individually to move them to the next step in academics and social consciousness."

Upon her return, she was thrilled to reconnect with some of her old colleagues, and to get to know newer ones. Gloria feels that "being in a community with incredible teachers offers opportunities for development. There is a lot of support, but being here has a sense of holding yourself to standards." Gloria holds a degree in Environmental Education from the University of Michigan and a Masters in Elementary Education from Cabrini.
