What are the schools our students deserve?

Thursday, October 7, 2004
7:00 - 9:00 pm

Our journey begins on Thursday evening at the Lang Performing Arts Center at Swarthmore College with a keynote address by Alfie Kohn entitled The (Progressive) Schools Our Children Deserve. In his address, Kohn, author, educator and educational advocate, will offer a series of questions designed to help our schools move further in the direction of helping children become good learners and good people. Join us in exploring how a constellation of progressive approaches can promote the development of each child while simultaneously promoting a democratic society.

What are the faces of progressive education in the 21st Century?

Friday, October 8, 2004
8:00 am - 4:30 pm

Through Descriptive Reviews of Practice, PowerPoint presentations, and a poster session, ten progressively oriented schools/programs will share details of their progressive practices. Join the Mission Hill School, The Calhoun School, City and Country School, The University of Chicago Lab School and others as they share their best practices, essential questions and recurring challenges. Special addresses by Katherine Schultz from the University of Pennsylvania, author of Listening, A Framework for Teaching Across Differences, and Penny Colgan-Davis, Principal of the Russell Byers Charter School, an urban elementary school based on the Expeditionary Learning Outward Bound model.

What challenges do we face?

Saturday, October 9, 2004
8:00 am - 4:30 pm

By the end of the day on Friday several questions/challenges facing progressive education will emerge. Much of the day Saturday will be devoted to identifying and defining these challenges/questions and dividing into focus groups. Each focus group will begin "working" their issue through an inquiry-based learning model. Patricia Carini, author, speaker, educator and co-founder of the Prospect School and Center will give a special address.
